Jay Vaai

Managing Director

Story

Jay is the Director of Vaai Ltd, a Licensed Residential Carpenter, and a Masters Graduate with Merit in Building Science from Victoria University.

Born and raised in the village of Siusega, Samoa, Jay landed in NZ at the age of 17 to pursue studies in construction. Over the course of 15 years of experience spanning residential, commercial, and heavy civil on some of New Zealand's largest projects. His career progression has grown from labor hire and building apprentice through to Junior Site Manager and later as an Engineering Manager across multiple large and small construction businesses giving him a comprehensive understanding of the trade from the ground up.

Jay combines over a decade of technical design skills in CAD/BIM with hands-on construction skills to showcase complex construction methodology with a focus on temporary works and traffic management staging. This enables a wider public and non-construction stakeholders to understand and respond on the implications of some of NZs most complex project proposals.

Jay is the 2014 NZIOB Helen Tippett Supreme Award and Te Ropu Awhina Scholarship recipient for his thesis on 4D Augmented Reality BIM. As a Builder, he has contributed to iconic projects including The Peep House, which won the Canterbury Regional Award for a New Build.
